CCNA / CCNP Home Lab Tutorial: Assembling Your Cisco Home Lab

A CCNA or CCNP candidate who wants to be totally prepared for their exams is going to put together a home lab to practice on. With used Cisco routers and switches more affordable and plentiful then ever before, there's really no excuse to not have one!
With the many different models available, there is some understandable confusion among future CCNAs and CCNPs about which routers to buy and which ones to avoid. You can take almost any set of Cisco routers and put together a home lab; part of the learning process is taking what equipment you have available and putting together your own lab! For those of you preparing to start your home lab or add to your existing one, this article will list the routers I use in my Cisco pods. You certainly don't have to have all this equipment, but this will give you some good ideas on how to get started.
The most versatile router you can get for your CCNA / CCNP home lab is a 2520. These routers come with four serial ports, one ethernet port, and one BRI interface for ISDN practice. This mix of interfaces means you can actually use it as a frame relay switch while using the ethernet and BRI ports for routing. (There is no problem with using a lab router as both your frame relay switch and a practice router; for a frame relay switch sample configuration, visit my website!)
My pods consist of five routers and two switches, and three of the five routers are 2520s, due to their versatility. A recent ebay search showed these routers selling for $99 - $125, an outstanding value for the practice you're going to get.
I also use 2501s in my home labs. These have fewer interfaces, but the combination of two serial interfaces and one ethernet interface allows you to get plenty of practice.
A combination that works very well is using three 2520s; one as my dedicated frame relay switch, one as R1, and another as R2. Add a 2501 as R3, and you can have a frame cloud connecting R1, R2, and R3, a direct serial connection between R1 and R3, an Ethernet segment that includes all three routers, and an ISDN connection between R1 and R2 if you have an ISDN simulator. That combination will allow you to get a tremendous amount of practice for the exams, and you can always sell it when you're done!
2501s are very affordable, with many in the $50 range on ebay. It's quite possible to get three 2520s and one 2501 for less than $500 total, and you can get most of that money back if you choose to sell it when you're done.
With four routers to work with, you're probably going to get tired of moving that console cable around. An access server (actually a Cisco router, not the white boxes we tend to think of when we hear "server") will help you out with that. An access server allows you to set up a connection with each of your other routers via an octal cable, which prevents you from moving that console cable around continually. For an example of an access server configuration, just visit my website and look in the "Free Training" section.
Access server prices vary quite a bit; don't panic if you do an ebay search and see them costing thousands of dollars. You do NOT need an expensive access server for your CCNA / CCNP home lab. 2511s are great routers to get for your access server.
One question I get often from CCNA / CCNP candidates is "What routers should I buy that I can still use when I'm ready to study for the CCNP?" The CCIE lab changes regularly and sometimes drastically when it comes to the equipment you'll need. During my CCIE lab studies, I found that renting time from online rack rental providers was actually the best way to go. Don't hesitate when putting your CCNA / CCNP home lab together, wondering what will be acceptable for the CCIE lab a year or so from now. None of us know what's going to be on that equipment list, so get the CCNA and CCNP first - by building your own Cisco home lab!

General Certifications and Focused Certifications
Cisco offers three levels of general certification representing increasing levels of expertise: Associate, Professional, and Expert (CCIE). Different tracks across these levels align with varying career needs. A variety of focused Cisco Qualified Specialist certifications are available as well to show knowledge in specific technologies, solutions or job roles.

CCNA
The CCNA certification (Cisco Certified Network Associate) indicates a foundation in and apprentice knowledge of networking. CCNA certified professionals can install, configure, and operate LAN, WAN, and dial access services for small networks (100 nodes or fewer), including but not limited to use of these protocols: IP, IGRP, Serial, Frame Relay, IP RIP, VLANs, RIP, Ethernet, Access Lists.

CCNP
The CCNP certification (Cisco Certified Network Professional) indicates advanced or journeyman knowledge of networks. With a CCNP, a network professional can install, configure, and troubleshoot local and wide area networks for enterprise organizations with networks from 100 to more than 500 nodes. The content emphasizes topics such as security, converged networks, quality of service (QoS), virtual private networks (VPN) and broadband technologies.

CCSP
The CCSP certification (Cisco Certified Security Professional) indicates advanced knowledge of securing Cisco networks. With a CCSP, a network professional can secure and manage network infrastructures to protect productivity and reduce costs. The content emphasizes topics such as perimeter security, virtual private networks, intrusion protection as well as how to combine these technologies in a single, integrated network security solution.

CCIP
The CCIP (Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional) provides individuals working in service provider organizations with competencies in infrastructure IP networking solutions. CCIP professionals have detailed understanding of networking technologies in the service provider arena including IP routing, IP QoS, BGP, and MPLS.

CCIE R&S
CCIE certification in Routing and Switching indicates expert level knowledge of networking across various LAN and WAN interfaces, and a variety of routers and switches. Experts in R&S solve complex connectivity problems and apply technology solutions to increase bandwidth, improve response times, maximize performance, improve security, and support global applications. Candidates should be able to install, configure, and maintain LAN, WAN, and dial access services.

Becoming a CCIE requires passing a set of exams
There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional certifications and/or specific training courses are not required. Instead, candidates are expected to have an in-depth understanding of the subtleties, intricacies and challenges of end-to-end networking. You are strongly encouraged to have 3-5 years of job experience before attempting certification. To obtain your CCIE, you must first pass a written qualification exam and then a corresponding hands-on lab exam.

CCIE Security
CCIE certification in Security indicates expert level knowledge of IP and IP routing as well as specific security protocols and components.

CCIE VoIP (350-030)
CCIE certification in Voice indicates expert level knowledge of VoIP solutions in the enterprise. Candidates should be able to install, configure and maintain Voice solutions over IP networks. The CCIE Voice track, however, does not certify an understanding of the infrastructure over which VoIP solutions are implemented. This contrasts with the CCIE Service Provider-IP Telephony track which certifies an individual as a core IP expert with a high degree of VoIP literacy.

CCIE Storage
CCIE certification in Storage Networking indicates expert level knowledge of intelligent storage solutions over extended network infrastructure using multiple transport options such as Fibre Channel, iSCSI, FCIP and FICON. Storage Networking extensions allow companies to improve disaster recovery, optimize performance and take advantage of network services such as volume management, data replication, and enhanced integration with blade servers and storage appliances.

General Certifications: Three Levels of Certification
Associate. The first step in Cisco networking begins at the Associate level. Think of this as the apprentice or foundation level of networking certification.
Professional. This is the advanced or journeyman level of certification.
Expert. This is CCIE, the highest level of achievement for network professionals, certifying an individual as an expert or master.

General Certifications: Four Different Paths
Network Installation and Support. This path is for professionals who install and support Cisco technology-based networks in which LAN and WAN routers and switches reside.

Network Engineering and Design. This path is for professionals who design Cisco technology-based networks in which LAN and WAN routers and switches reside.

Service Provider. This path is aimed at professionals working with infrastructure or access solutions in a Cisco end-to-end environment primarily within the telecommunications arena.

Network Security. This path is directed toward network professionals who design and implement Cisco Secure networks.

The current technologically-inclined workforce is expanding and improving at a tremendous rate. For IT workers, and even employers, the pace has quickened and keeping up with changes is a constant battle. This technological battleground is universal for all workforces. All jobs, blue-collar to white-collar, involve or require some form of computer and/or technological aptitude.

You can't really go through life or working with a blank stare when it comes to current and upcoming technologies; you've got to be somewhat familiar, in the least. But, then again, being slightly acquainted isn't all that advantageous either. It is full awareness and ability to learn and adapt, with any technical servicing, that are essential to getting on track and getting ahead with a solid IT career.

Knowledgeable, keen and willing individuals will be quite successful in the IT work world. But, to have a certain shoe-in and to get on top, you need credentials; and a snazzy resume or just sheer knowledge isn't enough. You need papers, and proof! So, validate yourself
Credentials here in the professional IT sphere are known as IT 'Certifications.'

What are IT Certifications?
Certifications are more or less accreditations you can attain through various testing to authenticate your knowledge within a specific IT realm, skill or function.

Are Certifications A Must?
Even if you are well-accustomed to certain software and technical programs, you must have certification to get an employer's attention. Employers rely on certifications for many reasons, but mostly for factors of assurance toward hiring a prospective employee. And to gain this confidence technical or professional certification is relied on as a means to measure competency in prospective employees.

So, yes. Get certification!
Certifications are now recognized throughout the industry as the standard for validating IT knowledge and skill sets. They not only validate, but they assist individuals in displaying their proven level of expertise.

Certifications From An Employer's Perspective:
IT managers will tell you upfront that certification is crucial in deciding if a prospective employee lands a job or if a current employee receives a promotion. Attained certifications will also result in a few perks including: a higher salary, a heightened marketability and enhanced understanding. And even if you've been working IT for a few years, get more certification; you'll gain more respect from management and fellow colleagues.

One thing is certain, a never ending change is the only constant in the IT field. To compete, stay employed and succeed, certification is dire. The benefits are endless and you'll learn nonstop, so, what's to lose? If you're considering the IT option, be bold and go for it. Getting certified and maintaining your skills with current technical innovations are the key to continued professional success in the IT arena.

If you are feeling confident, then you are creating that confidence within yourself. If you are feeling depressed, you are creating your own depression. When you are motivated, you are creating that state of empowerment.
No one or nothing can affect or change your state unless you choose to allow yourself to get into that state.
Is this really true? Well, think about this. Why is it that two people can encounter the exact same event, but feel totally different about it?
One person may experience fear at having to speak in front of a large audience, while the other feels totally relaxed.
One person may feel totally motivated coming into the office, while the other feels bored & tired. One person may feel inspired and challenged when faced with an obstacle while another person feels demoralized.
So, you see, it is not what happens on the outside that affects a person's state, but what happens on the inside.
So how do we create our states? When we are feeling totally motivated, how do we create this state? When we are depressed, how do we create that depressing mood?
How we feel at any moment in time is determined by both of these Keys:
1. Our Physiology 2. Our Internal Re-presentation.
Your Physiology Affects Your State
The first thing that determines the state you are in is your physiology. Physiology means the condition and use of the physical body.
The condition of your body has a direct impact on how you feel. Do you feel different when your body is well rested and physically vibrant?
When your muscles are relaxed and your cells are bursting with energy, you are most likely to be in a peak state.
Conversely, after a night of tossing and turning with worry, having insufficient sleep, won't you feel your muscles aching and your joints being stiff?
You will easily get into states of tiredness, frustration and depression, non of these being very resourceful states.
This is why it is so important that our body is maintained in peak condition through both proper diet and exercise.
Highly successful individuals from Presidents to pop stars are consistently able to be in peak states because they keep themselves in peak physical condition through comprehensive exercise regimes.
Engaging in daily aerobic activities like swimming, running, cycling or jumping on the trampoline has an effect of oxygenating our body much more readily.
As oxygen and nutrients are carried into our bodies, our cells are nourished more effectively, giving us a lot more energy!
When our physical body is in a peak condition, we will find ourselves being in peak emotional states as well.
Your Internal Re-presentation Affects Your State.
The second factor that affects our state is your internal re-presentation. Your internal re-presentation is a fancy term meaning "How and What we think about."
What we perceive is not reality but an internal re-presentation of reality. It is how we internally re-present what is going on around us inside our mind.
This is why two people can encounter the same event, represent and feel very differently about this same event in their minds
Some of the key filters that determine what we delete, distort and generalize are our Beliefs, Values and Attitudes.
Because different people have different beliefs, values and attitudes, they delete, distort and generalize things very differently.
As a result, all of us experience a very different re-presentation of the world.
Some people have powerful beliefs, values and attitudes that allow them to constantly re-present things in a way placing them in an empowering state while others constantly re-present things in a way that puts them in a lousy, ineffective state.
Successful people are able to take charge and consciously direct their states from moment to moment. Unsuccessful people, on the other hand, find themselves constantly at the mercy of their (bad) habits and their environment.
By taking charge of our physiology and forming empowering internal representations, we have the keys that will allow us to be in constantly resourceful states enabling us to perform at our peak.
